Kerala is one of the most favourite Indian states of mine. It is rightly called as God’s own country due to its immense natural beauty, wild life, temples, beaches & backwaters. All this makes a perfect formula of a popular tourist destination. Many top travel websites & famous travel bloggers have written about the top things to do in Kerala. I thought that I shall write my own version of top 15 things to do in Kerala. Some of these things are a little off beat & few are mainstream. So here comes my list.


1 1- Drink Toddy in a Kallu shop♥

Toddy or Kallu is a mildly alcoholic beverage made from the sap of Palm trees. Toddy shop & its food is an integral part of Kerala culture. Toddy shop is the place to hang out with your friends. The main delicacies on offer are tapioca, ducks, pork, fish curries. To live like a local one must enjoy a glass of toddy with spicy food. 2 2 – Wear a Mundu or Kasavu Neriyathu

Mundu in Malyalam is the word for a cloth worn around waist. It is the traditional Kerala attire for men. Women can try Kasavu Neriyathu saree. 😉

3 – Take a spiritual journey to Lord Ayyappa

Lord Ayyappa’s shrine at Sabarimala is one of the largest pilgrimage sites in the world. To take darshan of Lord Ayyappa one must take a strict vratham for 41 days wearing black dhoti. It was one of the life changing experiences of my life.

4- Spend 24 hours in an Alleppey Houseboat 4

Kerala houseboats are also known as Kettuvalloms. This is the best way to enjoy the beauty of Kerala backwaters. It’s a world apart. To see the local folk life, enjoy the local cuisine one must take a leisurely trip in a Kettuvallom for at least 24 hours.

55 – Taste different varieties of bananas

I have never seen so many varieties of Bananas anywhere else like Kerala. Red, green, yellow, pale yellow, short, long, large- you think & they have it. Banana is widely consumed in Kerala in its all forms. It is rich with minerals & good for health.

6 – Watch the Kerala sunset6

The beauty of this God’s own country becomes more magical in the golden light of evening. You will get mesmerised by this wonderful experience.

77 – Take an elephant ride with your kids:)

Elephant is the state animal of Kerala. They are having very important place in temples & religious ceremonies. Taking a ride of a majestic animal will win you brownie points with your kids.

8 – Try delicious Kerala breakfast

This is an essential experience of Kerala. One must try healthy Kerala breakfast of Kadala, Parottha, puttu, veg stew, dosa, idiyappam etc. The taste will linger in your mouth for many days.

9 – Eat Karimeen Pollichathu or Karimeen fry 9 (2)9 (3)9Karimeen is the official fish of Kerala state mainly found in Kerala Backwaters. It is used in many delicacies Karimeen fry, Karimeen moilee & Karimeen Pollichathu. My personal favourite is Karimeen Pollichathu wrapped in a large banana leaf.

10    10 – Attend a Kathakali &

Kalaripayattu performance10 (2)  

Kathakali is a ritual dance drama of Kerala famous for its costumes. It takes hours to put on the make up for the Kathakali. I was lucky to watch the Kathakali ritual at Sreevallabha Temple at Thiruvalla. Though these pics are from the more touristy Kathakali & Kalaripayattu shows at Thekkady. Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest martial art forms in the world. Its a thrillin experience to watch this show live.

11 – Wander in tea estates of Munnar

Looking at these rolling green hills is a treat to your eyes. This can be enhanced by consuming lots of fresh air & many cups of tea.

12 – A walk through the Old Jew Town of Fort Kochi

This walk takes you to a different era. You can see lots of old style houses, spice & antique shops. It’s a must have heritage experience. You can also visit the synagogue & palace.

13 – Live in an Old Kerala House

The old Kerala houses are built in traditional Nalukettu architecture. It is built with wooden pillars & Attangudi tile flooring. Here you can see an old palatial house converted into a heritage hotel. Stay in this Hotel Travancore Palace was a royal experience.

14 – A boat ride in Periyar Tiger Reserve at Thekkady14

It is the best way to watch wild life of Periyar from close. You can become a mute witness to the drama. It’s a close encounter with the flora & fauna of The Western Ghats. You can also go for shopping in the spice market of Thekkady.

15 – Visit Thiruvanathapuram for Padmanabha Temple15 (2) & Kovalam Beach15

Your Kerala experience will not be complete without a visit to the capital of the state. Recently Padmanabha Swamy Temple was in news for the gold treasure found in it. It is the richest Hindu Temple in the world. Kovalam Beach is one of the most pristine beaches in India with white sand. A grand lighthouse adds beauty to the beach.
